The immediate veterinary costs of treating sick calves are exorbitant, but these costs are dwarfed by the lifetime (if they survive) drop in productivity of calves who carry the scar damage in their lungs for their entire life

A calf with an elevated temperature can still look healthy, drink milk but is likely in the incubation stage of an infection. Early diagnosis with appropriate speedy treatment will give calves the best chance of making a complete recovery.
