Our Anti-split shackles are made from 100mm polypropylene fastened on the cow’s leg with a 12mm bolt. It is especially important to tighten the lock nut securely with two spanners to ensure the shackles do not come undone.
The cow should be confined to a well bedded pen for at least 24 hours when the shackles are first put on to give her time to get used to them. Cows can manage cubicles, auto-scrapers etc while wearing shackles so do not be in too much of a hurry to remove them. Ligament damage can take months to make a complete recovery.
